Allison decided to become better. Sometimes there is absolutely nothing you can do but smile, nod, and go get in the bathtub. A stepmother has to walk a fine line of remaining involved and staying at a bit of a distance.
That is hard to do when someone is hurting your feelings on purpose on a regular basis or even trying to break up your marriage. If those children hate you and do everything in their power to make your life hell, you’ve got to know how to keep their actions separate from your own selfworth.
If you’re dealing with a really nasty kid, make doubly sure you’ve got a solid support network of family, friends, and qualified professionals. Above all, don’t give up hope. It was a long time before I could make peace with my parents and stepparents.
In fact, I was well into my twenties. But kids grow up. And every day we can learn more about ourselves to make the journey less bumpy for ourselves and for our stepfamilies.
